Credit checks
Phone contracts with a thin or bad credit file
A hard credit check is standard for pay monthly phones. Here is what networks check, which SIMs skip the check entirely, and how to build a history.
bemobiles tips
Will a refused application hurt my score?
A hard search is recorded on your file. Several in a short time can make lenders more cautious, so don’t apply everywhere at once.
Which SIMs have no credit check?
giffgaff, SMARTY, Lebara, VOXI and Asda Mobile don’t credit check; Lycamobile doesn’t on pay as you go.
Can a SIM only plan build credit?
A pay monthly plan that reports to credit agencies can help; prepaid SIMs usually don’t.

Bad credit in brief
- Pay monthly phone contracts always involve a credit check; on the big networks it’s a hard search.
- giffgaff, SMARTY, Lebara, VOXI and Asda Mobile sell SIMs with no credit check.
- A phone bought outright, refurbished or second-hand plus a no-credit-check SIM avoids the problem entirely.
- Apply once, not everywhere: several hard searches in a short time can make it worse.
How a phone credit check works
A phone contract is a form of credit: the network lends you the cost of the handset and you repay it monthly. Before agreeing, the network checks your file with one or more of the UK credit reference agencies — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. A hard search is recorded on your file and visible to other lenders; a soft search (used by eligibility checkers) isn’t.
Why applications get refused
- A thin file — little or no credit history, common for students and people new to the UK.
- Missed payments, defaults or county court judgments.
- Not being registered on the electoral roll at your address.
- Several recent applications for credit.
- Details that don’t match, such as an old address.
Routes that work with a poor file
| Route | Credit check? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Phone outright + no-credit-check SIM | None | The most reliable route; many 30-day SIMs cost under £10 a month |
| Refurbished or second-hand phone + SIM | None | Lowest total cost; check the phone is unlocked |
| Pay as you go | None | Monthly bundles, no contract |
| SIM only contract on a big network | Yes, usually smaller | Less credit than a phone contract, so sometimes accepted when a phone contract isn’t |
| Cheaper phone on contract | Yes | A lower-value handset can be easier to approve |
How to improve your chances next time
- Get your free statutory credit report and correct any errors.
- Register on the electoral roll at your current address.
- Pay existing bills on time; even a monthly SIM paid by Direct Debit builds a track record over time if it’s reported.
- Space out applications, and use soft-search eligibility tools where retailers offer them.
iD Mobile runs a hard credit check even on 30-day SIM only plans, so it isn’t a no-credit-check option. See network comparisons for each network’s checks.
